FRIDAY FUNDAY

24/11/23

A daily blog by a coach for the coach

AM:

FRIDAY MORNING FUN

It was another day, another breakfast club session visiting the lovely staff and pupils of St Mary’s, as much as this session is about the children being ready for the school day ahead, this session each morning is such a fulfilling thing for me to do personally, knowing that the children enjoy seeing me first thing everyday is something that never fails to fill me with immense pride!

Today, the idea for our breakfast club was to get the children working in a team to achieve a goal, the game we was playing was an accuracy game with hula hoops and bean bags and then a protection game. The protection game was to keep a tennis ball safe from two people that were trying to get it. The children used great teamwork skills.

ATHLETIC AFTERNOON

Each Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoon, we travel to visit the wonderful staff and children of Bursar Primary School which never fails to disappoint!

This term we are delivering 3 different PE sessions to the pupils of Bursar: Ball Games, Interpretive Dance: Jazz and Circuits, for Year 1/2, Year 3/4 and Year 5/6 respectively.

For me personally Ball Games and Circuits are something that aren't alien to me personally as a coach and/or PE Teacher. But Jazz themed dance is a new one for me but I'm determined to have learnt a great deal (from teaching these sessions) and from the children, that have dance backgrounds, by the end of the term.

But before each session we deliver a lunch time club for the children that consists of a different sports activity most days, so today for example I decided to play a game of 'Tower Rush' like we did with the children at Breakfast Club and they managed to grasp the concept really well and played the game in really good spirits.

This afternoons sessions were circuits sessions which I thoroughly enjoyed, the idea of our sessions this afternoon was to focus on all of our key muscle groups, working on a different muscle each station. The children came up with their own exercises which was very good input from them and excellent knowledge of how different exercises work different muscles.

The session flowed excellently from each class to the next which was a credit to the behaviour of the children throughout the afternoon.

Monday morning blues!

Today, the focus of our breakfast club session was improving our dodge-ball skills. But to warm up we played a very active game of King ball, a free-for-all dodge ball style game in which you are by yourself trying to win. The children completing the game very sensibly and an excellent level of honesty when getting out and also brilliant sportsmanship.

Active afternoons

Each Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoon, we travel to visit the wonderful staff and children of Bursar Primary School which never fails to disappoint!

This term we are delivering 3 different PE sessions to the pupils of Bursar: Ball Games, Interpretive Dance: Jazz and Circuits, for Year 1/2, Year 3/4 and Year 5/6 respectively.

But Jazz themed dance is a new one for me but I'm determined to have learnt a great deal (from teaching these sessions) and from the children, that have dance backgrounds, by the end of the term.

But before each session we deliver a lunch time club for the children that consists of a different sports activity most days, so today for example I set up a game of dodge ball inside due to the weather conditions outside The sessions went really well with a number of children massively engaged with it. All of the children that participated were excellently behaved and they played the game to a great standard. An added element was the help that the older children were giving to the younger ones whilst watching, and the affect of cheering someone on is massive for a child's motivation.

In today's lesson we were focusing on how to correctly give and receive a chest pass and a bounced chest pass. The dissection of the pass began by showing the children how to correctly hold the ball prior to passing it, the all managed to understand this and was able to put it into practice very effectively. We then had four lines set up with 2 of them opposite each other. They were chest passing the ball to each other and moving to the back of their line once they had passed the ball.

By the end of both session it was clear that all of the children now knew how to successfully complete a chest pass. We also determined what types of passes were long and short passes at the end of the lesson and the children smashed it so WELL DONE!
